These ranges come from planner guides and venue pages that differ a little. One calls 25 to 40 minutes the sweet spot for a ceremony, another puts a standard non-religious one at 20 to 30, so each figure below names its source. After the ranges comes a sample day for a 5 pm ceremony and an 11 pm end, built so every minute adds up.
How long is a wedding ceremony?
Joy’s ceremony guide (June 2026) puts a standard non-religious ceremony at 20 to 30 minutes and says most guests are comfortable with 20 to 35 before attention drifts, especially outdoors in warm weather. Paperlust (April 2026) gives 15 to 90 minutes overall depending on format. By type, in minutes unless it says hours:
| Ceremony | Joy, June 2026 | Paperlust, April 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Civil | 15 to 20 simple; 25 to 35 with readings | 15 to 25 |
| Non-religious or non-denominational | 20 to 30 | 25 to 45 |
| Interfaith | 30 to 45 | No figure |
| Protestant | 30 to 45 | 30 to 50 |
| Catholic, without Mass | 25 to 35 | 30 to 45 |
| Catholic, with Mass | 60 to 75 | 60 to 90 |
| Jewish | 20 to 30 without a full service | 30 to 60 |
| Hindu | No figure | 1 to 4 hours |
| Elopement | No figure | 10 to 20 |
Where the minutes go
Paperlust lists the parts of a ceremony with a low and a high figure for each. Added up, the nine parts come to 24 to 52 minutes. Readings and a unity ceremony are optional; without them the same list comes to 18 to 37 minutes. Paperlust suggests trimming readings first if a ceremony runs past 45 minutes.
| Part | Minutes |
|---|---|
| Processional | 5 to 10 |
| Opening remarks | 2 to 3 |
| Readings (1 to 3 readers) (optional) | 3 to 10 |
| Address or homily | 2 to 5 |
| Exchange of vows | 3 to 8 |
| Ring exchange | 2 to 4 |
| Unity ceremony (optional) | 3 to 5 |
| Pronouncement and first kiss | 1 to 2 |
| Recessional | 3 to 5 |
| All nine parts | 24 to 52 |
| Without the two optional parts | 18 to 37 |
The free wedding ceremony script builder lets you switch parts on and off and sets the minutes for each. The free wedding processional order builder works out who walks when.
How long is a wedding reception?
One of a Kind Events (October 2024) and MayFair Farms, a venue (May 2026), both put the average reception at 4 to 6 hours, not counting the ceremony. MayFair says 4 hours suits a Sunday or a smaller wedding, 5 to 6 hours is standard for a Saturday evening, and it recommends planning around 5. One of a Kind says formal receptions often run 5 to 6 hours, casual ones 4 to 5, and brunch receptions about 4.
| Part | Minutes |
|---|---|
| Cocktail hour | 60 |
| Dinner | 60 to 120 |
| Toasts and speeches | 30 |
| First dance, parent dances, cake cutting | 30 to 45 |
| Open dancing | 120 to 180 |
| Closing or send-off | 10 to 15 |
The arithmetic explains the 4 to 6 hour range. Add the low end of every part and you reach 310 minutes, or 5 hours 10 minutes. Add the high end and you reach 450 minutes, or 7 hours 30 minutes. A reception of 4 to 6 hours means a shorter version of some parts: a buffet, fewer speeches, less time on the floor. One of a Kind adds that venue rules, guest count and cultural or religious traditions all change the total.
Wedding reception timeline: a sample for a 5 pm ceremony and an 11 pm end
This day is a sample of ours, not a survey result. Every block sits inside the ranges above. The blocks add up to 390 minutes, from 4:30 PM to 11:00 PM, and the reception after the 30 minute ceremony is 5 hours 30 minutes.

Change the ceremony time and every row moves with it. The free wedding timeline template does that arithmetic from your ceremony time and adds the morning, with hair, makeup and photos. For venues: the booking is longer than the party
A guest sees 4:30 PM to 11:00 PM. The venue’s booking runs longer, because vendors load in before the first guest and load out after the last. The sample ends with the send-off at 11:00 PM, so the contract should list load-in, the event hours and load-out as separate times. The free venue rental agreement template has fields for all three. Check the room holds the guest count in each part of the day with the free venue capacity calculator.
Next step
Copy the sample table, set your ceremony time and your venue’s end time, and send it to the couple with the proposal so the length is agreed before the contract. If the end time doesn’t leave room for the blocks, cut a part now. It’s easier than asking the DJ to cut one at 10 pm.
