Free cake serving calculator and serving chart

On Wilton's chart a 6 inch round cake serves 12 wedding slices, an 8 inch 24, a 10 inch 38 and a 12 inch 56, with each slice about 1 x 2 inches. Party slices of about 1.5 x 2 inches give 12, 20, 28 and 40.

Put in your guests and the calculator finds the smallest cake that covers them. For 100 guests at wedding slices that is a 16 inch round (100 slices), or three tiers of 12, 9 and 6 inches (100 slices). It runs in your browser, free, with no account.

Cake serving chart for wedding and party slices

This is Wilton's chart for the pans the calculator uses. Wedding slices are about 1 x 2 inches and party slices about 1.5 x 2 inches; the counts assume a two-layer cake 4 inches high. Wilton says the numbers are a guide only.

Half sheet and full sheet cake servings

Wilton's chart stops at the 12 x 18 inch pan, 98 wedding slices or 72 party slices, and has no full sheet. WebstaurantStore, a pan seller, cuts sheet cakes into bigger slices of 2 x 3 and 2 x 2 inches, so its counts are lower.

How cake slices are counted

The slice size sets the count: a 1 x 2 inch wedding slice is smaller than a 1.5 x 2 inch party slice, so the same cake gives more of them. Height matters less. Wilton says a cake 3 to 6 inches high serves the same number as a 4 inch one in the same pan because it is cut the same way, while a cake under 3 inches serves half.

The count also depends on who cuts. Wilton's own blog says an 8 inch cake yields 30 to 33 servings when it is cut in rings, against 20 party or 24 wedding slices on its chart. Ask your baker or caterer what slice they cut.

Tiers add up, but sources differ

Wilton's chart gives no totals for tiers, so the calculator adds the pans: a 12, 9 and 6 inch stack at wedding slices is 56 + 32 + 12 = 100. Baker Veena Azmanov gives tier totals as ranges, such as 80 to 90 slices for the same three rounds, which is lower than the sum. If a bakery quotes a number for your design, use theirs.

How the calculator works

Slices needed is the guests times the share who will eat cake, rounded up. The calculator then tries every one-, two- and three-tier cake from the sizes in the chart (or up to three sheets) and picks the one with the fewest slices that still covers your guests. Tiers are different sizes; a tie goes to fewer tiers. Each setting is listed here.

  • Guests who will eat cake, 100%. An assumption: every guest gets a slice, so the cake is never short. We have no source for a lower share, so lower it yourself if you know some guests will skip.
  • Slice. Wilton's two slice sizes, wedding (about 1 x 2 inches) and party (about 1.5 x 2 inches).
  • Kitchen cake. Paperlust describes a kitchen cake as undecorated sheet cakes cut and plated in the kitchen while a small display cake is used for the cutting. The calculator takes the sheet you choose from the slices needed, using Wilton's count for it, and sizes the display cake for the rest.
  • Top tier saved. One Wilton wedding cake project leaves the top tier out of its serving count and says it is often saved for the first anniversary. With this ticked, the smallest tier of a two- or three-tier cake does not count toward your guests.
  • Cake cutting fee. Paperlust says the venue charges this per slice. We have no source for a typical amount, so the box starts empty. The total is your fee times the slices needed; venues differ on which slices they charge, so ask yours.

The smallest cake for 25 to 300 guests

The calculator's own output at the defaults: every guest eats cake, wedding slices, round tiers. This is an example, not a recommendation for your party.

Example only. Round tiers in inches, then the slices the cake gives in brackets.
GuestsOne tierTwo tiersThree tiers
259 in (32)8 + 4 in (32)8 + 6 + 4 in (44)
5012 in (56)10 + 6 in (50)9 + 6 + 4 in (52)

300more than one cakemore than one cake18 + 16 + 12 in (302)

A kitchen cake shifts the whole table. For 100 guests, a 12 x 18 inch kitchen sheet gives 98 wedding slices and leaves 2 for the display cake, so the smallest cake is the 4 inch round. For 150 guests it leaves 52, and 9 + 6 + 4 inch round covers that with 0 spare. Saving the top tier of a three-tier cake for 100 guests moves the answer to 14 + 8 + 4 inch round, which serves 102 after the 8 saved.

Ask the venue before you order the cake

Ask whether the venue charges a cake cutting fee and how it counts slices, who cuts and plates the cake, and where it can stand until the cutting. Put the slice count and the cake on the banquet event order so the kitchen and the servers read the same numbers.

The free wedding timeline template puts the cake cutting at a time that fits your dinner. For the rest of the food and the bar, the free catering food calculator and the free wedding alcohol calculator use the same guest count.

Cake serving questions.

How many does a 10 inch cake serve?

A 10 inch round cake, two layers and 4 inches high, serves 38 wedding slices (about 1 x 2 inches) or 28 party slices (about 1.5 x 2 inches), according to Wilton. A 10 inch square serves 50 or 30.

How big a cake do I need for 100 guests?

If all 100 guests have a wedding slice, a 16 inch round serves exactly 100, and so do tiers of 12, 9 and 6 inches. With party slices it takes an 18 inch round (101 slices). If only 80 guests will eat cake, 12 and 8 inch tiers serve 80.

How many slices are in a half sheet cake?

A 12 x 18 inch half sheet serves 98 wedding slices or 72 party slices by Wilton's count. WebstaurantStore, a pan seller, counts 36 slices of 2 x 3 inches or 54 of 2 x 2 inches, because its slices are bigger.

What is the difference between wedding and party slices?

Wilton counts wedding slices at about 1 x 2 inches and party slices at about 1.5 x 2 inches, so the same cake gives more wedding slices. A 12 inch round gives 56 wedding slices or 40 party slices.

Does a taller cake serve more?

Not between 3 and 6 inches. Wilton says cakes 3 to 6 inches high in the same pan serve the same number because they are cut the same way, and a cake shorter than 3 inches serves half the listed number.

How do you cut a round cake?

Wilton says to start about 2 inches in from the edge and cut a circle, then slice that outer ring into pieces about 1.5 inches wide. For cakes larger than 8 inches it repeats with 2 inch rings until a 6 inch center remains, which it cuts into 12 wedges.

Does the serving count include the top tier?

Wilton's chart counts every pan as a cake of its own, so the tiers add up. A Wilton wedding cake project says its serving count leaves out the top tier, which is often saved for the first anniversary. Tick "top tier is saved" in the calculator to take it off: a 12, 9 and 6 inch stack then serves 88 instead of 100.
